How to stop being defensive
The problem is not the defence. It is that it fires before the sentence has landed.

What one week leaves you: a log, in your words.
The short answer
When someone tells you something about yourself, three things arrive together and feel like one. What they said. The move that fires to answer it: the context, the counter-example, the "I know, but". And what you will do with it, which is yours and should come last. Defensiveness is the middle one getting there first.
It is quick because it is old, and from the inside it feels like accuracy, because it does not lie. It selects the true things that keep the sentence out. Here is the test: could you say back what they said, in their words, before you answered it? Not your summary. Theirs. If you cannot, whatever you said next was addressed to what the sentence would mean about you, not to the sentence. Tonight, when the next one lands, say it back to them first, and decide tomorrow what to keep.
Sound familiar?
Tick the ones that are you.
Two or more and the week is worth ten minutes. Nothing you tick is stored.
The first thing I say is the context. I'm answering before they've finished.
I let it land before I answer it. The decision is mine, and it comes last.

Roisin says it while she is rinsing a mug, not even facing him: "You were a bit short with my mum on the phone." Soren has answered before the tap is off. She asked the same thing four times. He had the landlord on an hour earlier. He was tired, and he still stayed on for twenty minutes. It comes out in order, all of it true, and Roisin says "okay" and opens the dishwasher.
Later, on the sofa, Soren finds himself listening to the "okay". Three years ago she would have argued, and somewhere inside it he would have heard her. He runs the kitchen back slowly. She said "a bit short". That was the whole sentence. What he answered was a far bigger charge nobody had brought: bad son-in-law, cold man. He defended that man for two full minutes, and the man was not in the room.

The turn
The cost is the information. Everything you most need to know about how you land on other people is held by other people, and it only reaches you if somebody says it.

The quick answer teaches them not to, one small closing at a time, and after two or three the person quietly stops. You do not hear the stopping. You hear peace.
There is a second bill. A view you have stopped examining and started defending has to be re-defended every time, and being right buys a colder room: the colleague who checks with somebody else before you arrive. Your case may be airtight. That is often the problem: there is no space in it for the other person.
Why it is called Keel
The part of the boat you never see.
A keel sits under the waterline. Nobody admires it from the dock. But when the wind hits, it is the reason a boat stays upright and holds its course instead of going wherever it is pushed.
What it costs
A week free. Then one payment.
- Ten minutes in your browser
- Six days on WhatsApp
- Your first log, sealed
- Ten more patterns, one a week
- The coach on WhatsApp, every day
- Nothing renews
Parts Two to Four are $199 each, and each one opens when you finish the part before. Finish any part and Practice is $20 a month: the coach and spaced repetition over what you have already done. It does not unlock a new part.
What you can count on
Four promises, kept by how it is built.
Private by design
Nobody reads your logs. A partner you invite sees only which week you are on.
Nothing renews
Part One is one payment. No subscription, no auto-renew, no countdown.
Honest about what it is not
Not therapy. If what comes up is more than a pattern, Keel points you to real help.
Built on published work

One question a day, and your own words back. No feed, no streak, no leaderboard. I answer every message and take the first ten team calls myself. If session one shows you nothing true in ten minutes, close the tab; it kept nothing.
Krish, founder
Why do I get defensive when someone criticises me?
Because the sentence is being treated as a threat and answered at threat speed, before the slower part of you that could weigh it has arrived. So the content, the flinch and the verdict happen in one motion, and the verdict is always the same, because it was reached before the content came in. Nothing new gets through a process that closes before it opens.
How do I stop being defensive with my partner?
Change the order rather than the feeling. Let them finish, say their sentence back in their words, and answer nothing that day. The urge to restore the context will be strong and can wait twenty-four hours. Watch for the quiet, too: if someone close has gone silent on a subject and you have been calling it peace, that is usually the parry having worked.
What if they are actually wrong?
Then you set it down, and that is a real outcome. People tell you wrong things about yourself all the time. The claim here is narrower: the decision about what to keep is only a good decision when it is made after the content has arrived, and the quick answer exists to make sure it never does. Deciding later is not agreeing. It is deciding with the information in the room.
Why do small comments set me off?
Because the size of the reaction usually belongs to something underneath it: something you wanted that got blocked, something you expected that did not happen, or something you have needed to say and never said. The remark is the trigger, not the charge. Naming which of the three is running takes about thirty seconds and shrinks the whole thing to a workable size.
Can I actually change this?
Yes, and people notice within weeks. It is a change of sequence, not personality: the content lands, the old move still fires, you feel it and do not obey it. What comes back is the thing you were paying for in every other currency. People preface less, and they tell you the difficult thing early, while it is still small and still cheap to fix.
