What one week leaves you: a log, in your words.

The short answer

How to stop waiting for things to change

Separate two questions that feel like one: whose fault is it, and where is your hand on it now. The first looks backward for someone to charge and, in a stuck situation, usually has a true answer that changes nothing. The second looks at the present and asks what's yours to move. Real things happen that you didn't choose; this isn't about denying any of them. It's that a person waiting for a situation to change has one move, and a person who can find their hand in it has dozens. The test: list everything wrong with the situation, then list what you've actually tried in the last thirty days. If the second list is empty, the waiting has become the situation. One unglamorous move, an ask, a look at the numbers, a sentence never said, is where authorship starts.

Week 8 · Authorship

You might recognise this

Divya has been "next in line" for a promotion for two years.Read the story

Divya has been "next in line" for a promotion for two years. Her story is well built and she delivers it smoothly, because she has: the org is political, her manager plays favorites, the last role went to a guy who is better at self-promotion than at work. All plausibly true. Then over coffee a mentor listens to the whole thing, nods, and asks one question: "What have you asked for, explicitly, out loud, with a date?"

Divya opens her mouth to answer and finds nothing there. She scans two years for the moment she said "I want the senior role, and I'd like to know what's between me and it," and the moment does not exist. What exists instead is a long, disciplined performance of deserving, and a waiting she had privately graded as patience. That evening she books the meeting for Thursday.

From Authorship.

The turn

Victimhood is often accurate and always expensive. It can be completely true that you were wronged and completely useless to live there.

Authorship is not blame; blame is a verdict about the past, authorship is a grip on the present.

Why it is called Keel

The part of the boat you never see.

A keel sits under the waterline. Nobody admires it from the dock. But when the wind hits, it is the reason a boat stays upright and holds its course instead of going wherever it is pushed.

Four promises, kept by how it is built.

  • Private by design

  • Honest about what it is not

Not therapy. If what comes up is more than a pattern, Keel points you to real help.

  • Built on published work

94 sources, from Heidegger to Frankl. The whole bibliography is public.

One question a day, and your own words back. No feed, no streak, no leaderboard. I answer every message and take the first ten team calls myself. If session one shows you nothing true in ten minutes, close the tab; it kept nothing.

Questions

Before you start.

What does it mean to stop feeling like a victim?

Not accepting blame. Blame is a verdict about the past. The other question is a grip on the present: given what happened, where is my hand on this now? Real things happen that you did not choose and none of that is denied. It is only that a person waiting for a situation to change has one move, and a person who can find their hand in it has dozens.

What if it genuinely was not my fault?

It often is not, and that is exactly what makes it expensive. It can be completely true that you were wronged and completely useless to live there. The account stays accurate; what goes missing is every move available inside it. Nobody is asking you to accept a charge you do not owe, only to look at what is yours to move.

How do I know if I am stuck here?

List everything wrong with the situation, then list what you have actually tried in the last thirty days. Not considered. Tried. If the first list is fluent and well rehearsed while the second is empty, the waiting has quietly become the situation. Another sign: "there's nothing I can do" feels both true and slightly comfortable, and advice irritates you before you have heard it.

Ten minutes, no account, and you will have your own version of this named.
