How to stop overthinking

Most of what keeps you up was never the event; it is the meaning you added.

What one week leaves you: a log, in your words.

The short answer

Why do I overthink a text with no reply

Because a text with no reply is almost pure blank space, and a mind fills blank space fast. Nothing happened, so there is nothing to think about, so you think about everything: what you said, how it read, what they must have decided about you. Within an hour the silence has a plot. The useful move is not to stop thinking. It is to separate two things that arrived welded together: what happened (one message, no reply, so many hours) and what you decided it meant (they're annoyed, you're too much, this is how it starts). The first list is short and fixed. The second is yours, and it is doing all the damage. Write both lists, one line each, and notice which one you've been living in.

Sound familiar?

Tick the ones that are you.

Two or more and the week is worth ten minutes. Nothing you tick is stored.

The week it costs you

I decide what a silence means before the other person has said anything.

Week 1 · The Facts and the Story

You might recognise this

Maya texts her sister Prisha on Thursday: "Can you call me when you get a chance?" By Friday night, nothing.Read the story

Maya texts her sister Prisha on Thursday: "Can you call me when you get a chance?" By Friday night, nothing. By Saturday morning something in her quietly changes gears. She rereads her own text and it starts to look needy, or too cold; either way, evidence. By afternoon she has assembled the whole case. Prisha is still angry about the holidays. Prisha has decided Maya is the difficult one. Each hour of quiet gets filed as another exhibit, and the anger feels like information arriving, not like something she is making.

Sunday, Prisha calls, breathless: her phone died at a work retreat, no charger anywhere. Standing in the kitchen afterwards, Maya runs the weekend back and finds the seam. One unanswered text, forty-eight hours. That is the whole list. The angry sister came out of Maya, wearing the costume of a fact.

From The Facts and the Story.

The turn

The speed is the whole difficulty. The meaning arrives faster than thought, so it doesn't feel authored; it feels observed, like seeing that a room is cold.

Once you can see which half of your certainty is footage and which half you supplied, you get a choice you didn't have while they were fused.

A sailing boat cut away at the waterline. The wind pushes on the sails; the keel, under the water, keeps the boat upright and on course. The windwhatever the week throws at youthe waterlineThe keelthe part nobody sees.It keeps you upright.

Why it is called Keel

The part of the boat you never see.

A keel sits under the waterline. Nobody admires it from the dock. But when the wind hits, it is the reason a boat stays upright and holds its course instead of going wherever it is pushed.

Questions

Before you start.

What is overthinking, actually?

Mostly it is one short event and a great deal of added meaning, still running hours after the event finished. A camera records words, actions, times and faces. It never records why. Whatever the camera missed and you are still certain about is the part you supplied, and that part is what keeps you awake.

Why can't I stop thinking about something small that happened?

Because the small thing took four seconds and the meaning is still going. A short reply or a silence is close to blank space, and a mind fills blank space fast. You are not turning over the event. You are turning over a case you assembled, and a case only gets stronger when it is left alone with itself.

Can overthinking change, or is it just how my mind works?

The speed does not change much, and it does not need to. What changes is what comes after. Once you can tell footage from commentary, the certainty loosens and the questions you were not asking become available again. Write the two lists for a week, what happened and what you decided it meant, and notice which one you have been living in.

Ten minutes, no account, and you will have your own version of this named.
