Existential dread

The short answer

How to stop putting off the things that matter

Count. Not the whole of life, one thing: visits, calls, Sundays with someone, evenings that went where you'd have chosen. Guess the number first, then work it out honestly. Most people are off by a factor of three, and the gap is what the word "soon" has been standing in front of. Your time is finite, and that is exactly why anything in your life matters; a choice only counts because you can't make all of them. That fact has a practical use. When a decision is genuinely hard and the list comes out even, finitude is the tiebreaker that never flatters you: what is a year of your life worth to each option? Then take the first ten minutes of the thing you've postponed longest and make them irreversible: a message sent, a class booked, a deposit paid, a call made. Not the plan for it. The first live move, in someone else's inbox, with a receipt.

Week 31 · The Time You Actually Have

Basim and his brother Karim have been saying "we'll do a proper trip, soon" since 2014. It is a warm sentence and they both mean it. Nothing dramatic prevents the trip, and that is exactly what makes the delay invisible. Flights are expensive one year, work is heavy the next, and soon keeps its shape through all of it.

Last month a form asked Basim for the date of his last visit, and he realized he did not know it. Waiting for the kettle, he did the arithmetic on the back of the form, in a column, like a schoolboy. Nine days together in eleven years, and most of those in airports. He sat with the number while the kettle clicked off. He would have guessed three times that. He booked flights that evening, two weeks in March. His wife asked what had brought it on. "I counted," he said.

The turn

This isn't a week about dread. For most people it lands as clarity, days a little more vivid and decisions a little easier.

If it lands as weight instead, put it down; nothing is proven by pushing through a thing that's pressing on you.

A sailing boat cut away at the waterline. The wind pushes on the sails; the keel, under the water, keeps the boat upright and on course. The windwhatever the week throws at youthe waterlineThe keelthe part nobody sees.It keeps you upright.

Why it is called Keel

The part of the boat you never see.

A keel sits under the waterline. Nobody admires it from the dock. But when the wind hits, it is the reason a boat stays upright and holds its course instead of going wherever it is pushed.

Questions

Before you start.

What is existential dread?

For most people it is the ordinary weight that arrives when a finite life stops being an abstraction: a birthday, a diagnosis in the family, a number counted honestly for the first time. It is not a fault and it is not a failure of positivity. It is what happens when something true comes into focus before there is any use attached to it yet.

How do I use the fact instead of being flattened by it?

Gently, and in one small place rather than across the whole of life. Count one thing: visits, calls, Sundays with someone. Guess the number first, then work it out honestly. Most people are off by a factor of three, and that gap is what the word soon has been standing in front of. The limit is also the reason anything counts, because a choice only means something when you cannot make all of them.

What if this lands as weight rather than clarity?

Then put it down. Nothing is proven by pushing through something that is pressing on you, and it will still be here when you want it. And if you are in crisis, or thinking about harming yourself, please stop reading now and call a crisis line or emergency services where you are, or reach a doctor or someone you trust today. Reaching for that is a good move rather than a last resort.
