Why accountability apps stop working
The app is not in the room at the moment the old move runs.
Then one message a day on WhatsApp, ten minutes, for a week. Free.

What one week leaves you: a log, in your words.
The short answer
An accountability app does three real things: it reminds you, it counts, and it puts a small social cost on a missed day. That is genuinely useful when you already know the behaviour you want and the only missing piece is the count. It stops working at the point where the count is not the problem.
The failure is always in the same place. You decided in calm, then the moment arrived in weather, and in the weather you decided again from scratch. A tracker records after that moment has gone, so it can tell you what happened and never what to do at seven ten on a Wednesday. What changes the moment is a sentence already in the room. Tonight, write the moment that undoes you as a place, a time and the thing that just happened, and one move you could finish in sixty seconds.

Tick the ones that are you.
Two or more and the week is worth ten minutes. Nothing you tick is stored.
My results are underpaid by the distance between my announcements and my ship dates.
I size my promises to fit my actual week, and I only give dates I've checked.

Vera asked for a raise in March, and her director did not say no.Read the story
Vera asked for a raise in March, and her director did not say no. He said: make the Q2 case. The case was simple, ship the onboarding revamp she had been promising next sprint since January. And she meant it every single time she said it was coming. Each Friday, typing "close" into the channel, she was not lying; she could feel the thing being nearly done. But each sprint it lost, narrowly and reasonably, to whatever was on fire.
In June the director did not argue or lecture. He turned his laptop around and scrolled, slowly, through one artifact: the thread of her own updates. Six "closes" in a log, each with a date. Vera watched her own sentences go by and felt them change meaning as they stacked. He moved the raise conversation to after it ships.

The turn
The drag is rarely dramatic and it is always billable. An unsent invoice is receivables ageing.

A slid deadline is the smaller project you get handed next quarter at the same salary. The gap between what you said and what you did converts into worse results at a steady rate, then hides inside explanations about the workload and the market. The test is not whether you are good. It is whether the thing is producing what it should, and which agreement is dragging on it.
Keel is one idea a week, ten minutes a day on WhatsApp, and a log in your own words. It counts nothing, and there is no streak to lose.
Why it is called Keel
The part of the boat you never see.
A keel sits under the waterline. Nobody admires it from the dock. But when the wind hits, it is the reason a boat stays upright and holds its course instead of going wherever it is pushed.
What it costs
A week free. Then one payment.
- Ten minutes in your browser
- Six days on WhatsApp
- Your first log, sealed
- Ten more patterns, one a week
- The coach on WhatsApp, every day
- Nothing renews
Parts Two to Four are $199 each, and each one opens when you finish the part before. Finish any part and Practice is $20 a month: the coach and spaced repetition over what you have already done. It does not unlock a new part.
What you can count on
Four promises, kept by how it is built.
Private by design
Nobody reads your logs. A partner you invite sees only which week you are on.
Nothing renews
Part One is one payment. No subscription, no auto-renew, no countdown.
Honest about what it is not
Not therapy. If what comes up is more than a pattern, Keel points you to real help.

One question a day, and your own words back. No feed, no streak, no leaderboard. I answer every message and take the first ten team calls myself. If session one shows you nothing true in ten minutes, close the tab; it kept nothing.

Do accountability apps work?
They work for what they are: a reminder, a count, and a small social cost for a missed day. That combination is enough when the behaviour is already decided and the only gap is memory. It is not enough when the same moment beats you every week, because by the time the app has recorded anything, the moment is over.
Why do I stop using habit trackers?
Usually around the point where the tracking becomes the thing you do instead of the thing. A streak is easy to protect and easy to abandon, and once it breaks the app has nothing left to offer. Notice which one you are actually attached to. If a broken streak feels worse than a missed run, the app has quietly become the goal.
What works better than an accountability app?
A decision made once, on paper, and left where the moment happens. Name the moment as a place, a time and the thing that just happened. Name a move you could finish in sixty seconds. Write the pair by hand and put the card in the drawer, the phone case or the bathroom mirror, wherever you will physically be. Then leave it there.
Does an accountability partner help?
More than an app, for one specific reason: a person can ask a question a count cannot. The useful question is not whether you did it. It is what happened at the moment you did not. Pick someone who will keep asking that on the same day every week and will not accept a vague answer, and tell them plainly that this is the job.
Is there a point where an app is the right tool?
Yes, and it is worth naming. When the behaviour is decided, the moment is not contested and you simply forget, a reminder is exactly the right size of help: the water, the medication time, the weekly transfer. The moment an app is asked to supply the wanting, it is doing a job that has never once been done by a notification.
