What one week leaves you: a log, in your words.

The short answer

Why do I never follow through on what I decide

Because you decided once, in calm, and then the moment arrived in weather, and in the weather you had to decide all over again. Most follow-through fails there: not at the deciding but at the re-deciding, at 7:10 on a Wednesday with the phone buzzing, when the choice you made on Sunday is simply not in the room. Almost everything you do repeatedly is cued by where you are and what just happened, not by what you want, so the contest in the moment is never between your intention and the old move. It's between the old move and nothing. The fix is smaller than willpower. Name the moment, as a place and a time and the thing that just happened. Name one move you could finish in sixty seconds. Write the pair by hand, "if this, then I do that," and put the card where the moment happens. Then leave it there.

Renske's savings goal is four years old and has never been met, and she can say exactly why, which is the unbearable part. It is not the amount. It is the 25th. The bank's text arrives at 9:03, salary in, and a small committee convenes in her head. The boiler is making that noise. This month is unusual; she will do double next month. The committee is reasonable, and it always wins.

In March, on a calm Sunday with no text coming, she wrote a sentence on the back of a business card and slid it into her phone case, where it would be the first thing she touched: when the salary text lands, move 200 before I open anything else. The 25th came. The text landed at 9:03. The committee began to speak. And she moved the money, in eleven seconds, before it had finished its first sentence.

The turn

A goal names an outcome and leaves every moment undecided; a resolution names a better version of you and leaves the moment to them. What's missing is not the wanting.

It's the sentence that tells the room what to do before you get there, so that when the moment arrives it does the remembering and you find yourself already moving.

A sailing boat cut away at the waterline. The wind pushes on the sails; the keel, under the water, keeps the boat upright and on course. The windwhatever the week throws at youthe waterlineThe keelthe part nobody sees.It keeps you upright.

Why it is called Keel

The part of the boat you never see.

A keel sits under the waterline. Nobody admires it from the dock. But when the wind hits, it is the reason a boat stays upright and holds its course instead of going wherever it is pushed.

Questions

Before you start.

What is an implementation intention?

A sentence written before the moment arrives, naming a specific moment and a specific move: if this happens, then I do that. The moment has to be one you would recognise without first having to notice that you should notice, and the move has to be finishable in under a minute. It decides once, on paper, so that the moment does the remembering for you.

Why do I never follow through on what I decide?

Because you decided once, in calm, and the moment arrives in weather. Almost everything you do repeatedly is cued by where you are and what just happened, not by what you want, so the intention is simply not present when the cue fires. The contest at 7:10 on a Wednesday is never between your intention and the old move. It is between the old move and nothing.

How is this different from a goal or a resolution?

A goal names an outcome and leaves every moment undecided. A resolution names a better version of you and leaves the moment to them. A tracker counts what happened after the moment has already gone. The if-then names only the moment, claims nothing about who you will become, and lives where the moment happens rather than in a notes app.

Ten minutes, no account, and you will have your own version of this named.
