The short answer

How to sit with uncomfortable feelings

Find it in your body before you find it in your head. Most suffering has two layers: the thing itself, and the war against feeling it. The fear, plus the project of not being afraid. Resistance feels productive because clenching feels like doing something, but it adds a second problem on top of the first and it costs sleep, appetite and the baseline you call just-how-I-am. So: stop moving. Unclench your jaw, let your shoulders drop, and go looking, slowly, chest to stomach to throat, for where the feeling actually is. Put a hand there, or just attention. Ten slow breaths into that spot, doing nothing else: no fixing, no explaining, no phone. About ninety seconds. Then notice what changed, even five percent. A feeling fully allowed tends to move. A feeling fought tends to stay.

Danny has been outrunning a specific Sunday-evening feeling for most of his adult life. It arrives around 5 p.m., reliable as a train: a hollow, restless dread he has never examined, because his whole system treats it as a fire alarm, and you don't study a fire alarm, you move. Plans get made at 4:30, preemptively. Screens go on. A drink gets poured.

This week the assignment was the opposite. Sunday, 5:10 p.m., he sat on the couch and turned nothing on. Then it arrived, right on schedule, and he did the one thing he had never done: nothing. Throat tightening. A hum of restlessness in his arms. Breath going short. What surprised him wasn't relief; there wasn't much relief. It was information. Under the dread sat a quiet, specific sadness: another week of his one life about to go to a job he does not care about.

The turn

This isn't resignation, positivity, or pretending it's fine. It's a physical skill, and a skill is built in mild weather.

Nobody learns to stay with something during the worst hour of their year.

Why it is called Keel

The part of the boat you never see.

A keel sits under the waterline. Nobody admires it from the dock. But when the wind hits, it is the reason a boat stays upright and holds its course instead of going wherever it is pushed.

Questions

Before you start.

What does sitting with a feeling actually mean?

Letting what is already present be present, without fixing it, explaining it, or leaving the room. Not approving of it, and not giving up on changing anything. It is physical rather than mental: locating the feeling in your chest, stomach, throat or jaw, and staying there with your breath while it does what feelings do when they are finally allowed to exist.

Why does avoiding a feeling make it worse?

Because most suffering has two layers: the thing itself, and the war against feeling it. Resistance feels productive, since clenching feels like doing something, but it adds a second problem on top of the first and burns enormous energy. The bill arrives in sleep, appetite and a baseline you have started calling just how you are. A feeling fully allowed tends to move. A feeling fought tends to stay.

What if nothing difficult is going on right now?

Then it is a good week to practise, because this is a skill and skills are built in mild weather. Nobody learns to stay with something during the worst hour of their year. It is also worth noticing that keeping busy so nothing catches up with you looks, from the inside, exactly like there being nothing there.
