What an online life coach actually does
A coach is not someone with the answer. It is someone with the question you avoid.
Then one message a day on WhatsApp, ten minutes, for a week. Free.
- No account, no card
- Free week, then $199 once
- Private by design
What one week leaves you: a log, in your words.
The short answer
An online life coach meets you by video, phone or message and works on what you want next rather than on what happened to you. The hour is mostly questions. A good one asks for the instance, the date, the exact words, the cost, and then asks what you will do and by when. It is not treatment, and a coach who starts diagnosing you is out of their depth.
What to look for: someone who tells you plainly what they do not do, who will say when to see a therapist instead, and who ends every conversation with something you have agreed to do with a date on it. What to be wary of: a plan handed to you in the first twenty minutes. Tonight, take the thing you have been waiting on and write the request you have never actually made, out loud, with a date.
Sound familiar?
Tick the ones that are you.
Two or more and the week is worth ten minutes. Nothing you tick is stored.

Divya has been next in line for a promotion for two years.Read the story
Divya has been next in line for a promotion for two years. Her story is well built and she delivers it smoothly, because she has: to her partner, to two friends from her old team, to herself on the commute. The org is political. Her manager plays favourites. The last role went to a man who is better at self-promotion than at work. All plausibly true.
Then over coffee a mentor listens to the whole thing, nods, and asks one question: "What have you asked for, explicitly, out loud, with a date?" Divya opens her mouth and finds nothing there. She scans two years for the moment she said "I want the senior role, and I'd like to know what's between me and it," and the moment does not exist. That evening she books the meeting for Thursday.

The turn
Be precise here, because the sloppy version of this gets ugly: it is not blame. Blame is a verdict about the past.

What a decent coach is after is narrower and more useful, which is where your hand is on the thing now. Real things happen that you did not choose. A person waiting for a situation to change has one move. A person who can find their hand in it has dozens.
Keel does that job without the hour and the calendar: one idea a week, ten minutes a day on WhatsApp, and a log in your own words at the end of it. It is not therapy, and there is nobody to impress.
Why it is called Keel
The part of the boat you never see.
A keel sits under the waterline. Nobody admires it from the dock. But when the wind hits, it is the reason a boat stays upright and holds its course instead of going wherever it is pushed.
What it costs
A week free. Then one payment.
- Ten minutes in your browser
- Six days on WhatsApp
- Your first log, sealed
- Ten more patterns, one a week
- The coach on WhatsApp, every day
- Nothing renews
Parts Two to Four are $199 each, and each one opens when you finish the part before. Finish any part and Practice is $20 a month: the coach and spaced repetition over what you have already done. It does not unlock a new part.
What you can count on
Four promises, kept by how it is built.
Private by design
Nobody reads your logs. A partner you invite sees only which week you are on.
Nothing renews
Part One is one payment. No subscription, no auto-renew, no countdown.
Honest about what it is not
Not therapy. If what comes up is more than a pattern, Keel points you to real help.
Built on published work

One question a day, and your own words back. No feed, no streak, no leaderboard. I answer every message and take the first ten team calls myself. If session one shows you nothing true in ten minutes, close the tab; it kept nothing.

What does a life coach actually do?
Ask questions, mostly, and hold you to what you said last time. The work of a good hour is narrowing: from things are stuck at work, to one meeting, one sentence you did not say, one request with a date on it. What a coach does not do is treat anything, prescribe anything, or tell you who you are.
How does online coaching work in practice?
Usually a call every week or fortnight, forty-five to sixty minutes, plus something between calls: a note, a message thread, a piece of homework you actually do. The between part is where most of the change happens, which is why the format matters less than whether anything reaches your Wednesday. Video, phone and text all work if that condition is met.
Do life coaches need a qualification?
In most countries, no. There is no licence and no protected title, and the certificates that exist range from serious to ornamental. That makes the interview yours to run. Ask what a typical hour looks like, what they will not do, what happens if something clinical comes up and who they refer to, and whether you can talk to someone they have worked with.
How do I know if coaching is working?
By what has changed outside the conversation. Six weeks in, you should be able to name one thing you now catch yourself doing, one request you made that you would not have made, and one week that went differently because of it. If the only evidence is that the conversations feel good, the conversations have become the thing.
Is a coach worth it if I already know what to do?
Knowing and doing come apart at a specific point, and it is usually the one where you would have to say something out loud to a particular person. That is where a coach earns the fee: not by telling you something new, but by asking, every week, what you asked for, explicitly, out loud, with a date.
