Why do I feel numb

Flatness is usually a climate you have been standing in, not a fact about your life.

What one week leaves you: a log, in your words.

The short answer

Why do I feel like nothing will ever change

Because you're standing in a mood, and a mood decides what you can see as possible before you've considered anything. An emotion is weather; it blows through a Tuesday. A mood is climate: the background you've lived in for months or years, so constant you've never noticed it as something that could be otherwise. Two moods run most adult lives. Resignation (nothing will change here, so why try) feels like realism and works like a ceiling. Resentment (I was wronged and someone owes me) feels like justice and works like a slow leak. The detection questions take four minutes: what have you stopped attempting, and what are you still owed? Notice which list comes faster. Then notice that not one item on the first list was a decision. Moods don't change by argument. They change when you act inside them.

Week 12 · Standing Moods

You might recognise this

Kirra is thirty-six and thinks of herself as level-headed.Read the story

Kirra is thirty-six and thinks of herself as level-headed. Steady job, rent paid, nothing wrong she could name. It is her friend Iona who says it, offhand, over noodles, not even looking up: "You've been in a bad mood since roughly 2021." Kirra laughs it off and walks home. And then she cannot stop turning it over, because she cannot refute it. She goes looking for the bad day that would explain it, and there isn't one.

That night she tries a question that isn't how do I feel; that one returns "fine" every time she runs it. She tries what have I stopped attempting? The list takes four minutes and is longer than she expects. She reads it back and notices the strangest part: not one item was a decision. Each just stopped being a live option, quietly, the way a shop you keep meaning to visit closes.

From Standing Moods.

The turn

Resignation is the only mood that builds the world it keeps describing: eleven years of evidence that asking doesn't work, gathered entirely by not asking. Your evidence is probably real.

What a mood won't let you see is everything it has no use for.

Why it is called Keel

The part of the boat you never see.

A keel sits under the waterline. Nobody admires it from the dock. But when the wind hits, it is the reason a boat stays upright and holds its course instead of going wherever it is pushed.

Questions

Before you start.

Why do I feel flat when nothing is actually wrong?

Because you may be standing in a mood rather than having a feeling. An emotion is weather: it blows through a Tuesday and is gone by dinner. A mood is climate, the background you have lived in for months or years, so constant you have never noticed it as something that could be otherwise. It does not need an event to explain it, and often there isn't one.

What is the difference between a mood and an emotion?

Reach and duration. An emotion is about something and it passes. A mood is not a feeling you are having; it is a setting on what you can see as possible. Two people get the same offer or the same diagnosis, and one sees a door where the other sees a wall, and neither of them experiences that as an interpretation.

How do I tell whether I am in one?

Two questions, about four minutes. What have you stopped attempting, and what are you still owed? Notice which list comes faster. Then look at the first list and notice that not one item was a decision. Each just stopped being a live option, without a meeting. Moods do not shift by argument; they shift when you act inside them.
