Why does the same thing keep happening to me

What one week leaves you: a log, in your words.

The short answer

Why does the same problem keep coming back in my life

Because you've been fixing the picture and the frame travelled with you. Every situation hangs inside a meaning you've decided it has: this job is what I settle for, this relationship is something we're surviving, money is an emergency that hasn't hit yet. The details are the picture; the meaning is the frame, and the frame converts everything inside it. That's why you can change jobs, partners and cities and land in the same place. Improvements land flat because the raise or the new routine is still hanging inside "not quite it". The test: line up the last three rounds of the recurring problem, different details, same feeling, and finish the sentence all three keep proving. "This situation is basically ___." Then ask how old that sentence is, and who wrote it.

Sanjay has changed teams twice in three years, both times to get away from a micromanager. This job was supposed to be the fix. New company, a manager, Colette, who said "autonomy" twice in his interview. And yet here he is at month four, watching it start again: the check-ins, the quick questions about status that arrive at 4:50. One Tuesday night he starts drafting the resignation letter. His third in three years.

Halfway through the second paragraph, for no reason he can name, he goes digging for the first two, finds them, and reads all three side by side. They are nearly identical documents about three different human beings. Different companies, different cities, different styles of attention, and in his telling they all play the exact same part in the exact same story, a story with one line at the bottom: they don't trust me.

From The Frame and the Picture.

The turn

The two kinds of work pay wildly differently. You can spend a year optimizing details inside a frame that turns everything to disappointment, or an afternoon honestly examining the frame itself.

A sailing boat cut away at the waterline. The wind pushes on the sails; the keel, under the water, keeps the boat upright and on course. The windwhatever the week throws at youthe waterlineThe keelthe part nobody sees.It keeps you upright.

Why it is called Keel

The part of the boat you never see.

A keel sits under the waterline. Nobody admires it from the dock. But when the wind hits, it is the reason a boat stays upright and holds its course instead of going wherever it is pushed.

Four promises, kept by how it is built.

  • Private by design

  • Honest about what it is not

Not therapy. If what comes up is more than a pattern, Keel points you to real help.

  • Built on published work

One question a day, and your own words back. No feed, no streak, no leaderboard. I answer every message and take the first ten team calls myself. If session one shows you nothing true in ten minutes, close the tab; it kept nothing.

Questions

Before you start.

Why does the same problem keep coming back?

Because the details changed and the container did not. Every situation hangs inside a meaning you have already decided it has, and that meaning converts everything inside it. Change jobs, partners and cities, and the meaning travels in the moving boxes, arriving before the new manager does and deciding in advance that attention means surveillance and questions mean doubt.

Why do improvements never seem to help for long?

Because the raise, the redecorated room or the new routine is still hanging inside "not quite it". A job held as what I settle for feels like settling however good the projects get. It is also why advice frustrates you: every suggestion works at the level of the details, and you cannot say why none of it helps.

How do I find the frame I am in?

Line up the last three rounds of the recurring problem, different details, same feeling, and finish the sentence all three keep proving: this situation is basically what? Then ask how old that sentence is and where you got it. Most can be dated, often to a first job or a first family, and they have been travelling ever since.
